Protect Your Child's Future
A criminal conviction can follow your child for the rest of his or her life, affecting college enrollment, scholarships, sports eligibility and job opportunities. One mistake made as a teenager can show up for decades on criminal background checks. It is important that your child has experienced defense representation to protect his or her record.
Juvenile defense requires an attorney with experience in the juvenile justice (family court) system and criminal justice system. The lawyers at Silver, Forrester & Lesser, P.C., have extensive experience in both courts. We will work hard to protect your child's rights and reduce or dismiss the charges. Please call 845.764.4757 or toll free at 866.687.1338 to schedule a consultation with our New Windsor juvenile offenders attorneys.
How We Can Help Your Child
Being charged as a juvenile is a serious matter. In New York, children as young as 13 can be tried as an adult for certain violent crimes, including murder and felony sex crimes. We represent children and teens charged with crimes such as:
- Underage drinking
- DWAI or DUI/DWI
- Minor in possession of drugs
- Assault and domestic violence
- Sex crimes
- Shoplifting and theft
- Vandalism and graffiti
- Weapons violations
Juvenile cases are not tried in front of a jury. Instead, a judge hears the case and makes a decision. To be effective, your lawyer must have experience in juvenile court and know how to present these cases to the judge.
The judge can find a child guilty of delinquent act and may impose penalties, including probation, adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, conditional discharge or placement with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
If found guilty in criminal court and under age 16, the child will be deemed a juvenile offender. In these cases, the records are typically sealed. Teens ages 16-19 may be found guilty and given youthful offender status, which will keep them from having a criminal record.
